The Truth About the Islamic Prayers

The Truth About the Islamic Prayers
In the past few weeks, there has been a lot of controversy regarding the Toronto District School Board‘s decision to allow Muslims to hold Friday prayer services in the cafeteria of Valley Park Middle School. While there has been a lot of emotional rhetoric on both sides of the issue, not many people know the intimate details or the implications of the prayers that are being recited by the Muslims. For example, not many non-Muslims are aware of Sura al Fatiha, which is the first Sura of the Qur’an, and is recited by Muslims in all of their daily prayers. The text of this Sura goes like this:

Sura 1:1-7—In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Cherisher and Sustainer of the worlds; Most Gracious, Most Merciful; Master of the Day of Judgment. Thee do we worship, and Thine aid we seek. Show us the straight way; The way of those on whom Thou hast bestowed Thy Grace, THOSE WHOSE PORTION IS NOT WRATH, AND WHO DO NOT GO ASTRAY.

Pay close attention to the last verse of the Sura. Most people (including the majority of Muslims) who hear this verse are unaware of what it refers to. Yet Islamic scholars throughout history have unanimously agreed that this is a reference to the Jews and Christians. What this means that each of the five prayers that is recited by Muslims everyday contains an exhortation against Jews and Christians. To prove that this is the case, here are what three of the most famous classical Muslims scholars have said regarding that verse:

Tafsir Ibn Kathir—This is why they were led astray. We should also mention that both THE CHRISTIANS AND THE JEWS have earned the anger and are led astray, but the anger is one of the attributes more particular of the Jews Allah said about THE JEWS, (Those (Jews) who incurred the curse of Allah and His wrath) (5:60). The attribute that THE CHRISTIANS deserve most is that of being led astray, just as Allah said about them, (Who went astray before and who misled many, and strayed (themselves) from the right path) (5:77).

Tafsir Ibn Abbas—(The path of those whom Thou hast favoured), the Religion of those whom You have blessed with the Religion and who are the followers of Moses, before the blessings of Allah deserted them, in that He shaded them with a white cloud and sent down on them honey and quails when they were in the wilderness. It is also said that (the path of those whom Thou hast favoured) refers to the prophets. (Not of those who earn Thine anger), not the religion of THE JEWS who earned Your anger, whom You forsook and whose hearts You did not protect until they became complaisant. (Nor of those who go astray), nor the religion of THE CHRISTIANS who erred from Islam. Amen: thus shall be its custodians; it is also said that Amen means let it be so. It is also said that it means: O our Lord! Do with us as we have requested You. And Allah knows best’.

Tafsir al Jalalayn—The path of those whom You have favoured, with guidance … not [the path] of those against whom there is wrath, namely, THE JEWS, and nor of those who are astray, namely, THE CHRISTIANS. The subtle meaning implied by this substitution is that the guided ones are neither the Jews nor the Christians. But God knows best what is right, and to Him is the Return and the [final] Resort. May God bless our lord Muhammad (s), his Family and Companions and grant them everlasting peace. Sufficient is God for us; an excellent Guardian is He. There is no power and no strength save in God, the High, the Tremendous.

Are we going to allow a prayer in our public school system that curses the adherents of two other major world religions in such a manner? It’s as though it wasn’t bad enough that the TDSB has given special privileges that have been denied to every other religion’s adherents (the right to have prayer meetings in school during school days).

If you have found this information to be helpful in forming your opinion on the matter, please forward this to all of your friends. It is vitally important that this information becomes known to the public. If you would like to join us in taking action against the implementation of Islamic prayers in the public schools of Toronto, there will be a demonstration in front of the TDSB headquarters on Monday, August 8, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. The address is as follows:

Toronto District School Board
5050 Yonge Street
Toronto, Ontario
M2N 5N8

We will see you there, Lord willing.
