Behavioral and Cognitive Consequences
According to the website of the National Coalition for the Protection of Children and Families, addiction to pornography may have severe consequences on the individual, and these consequences tend to escalate in the following manner:
- Addiction: Pornography provides a powerful sexual stimulant or aphrodisiac effect, followed by sexual release, most often through masturbation
- Escalation: Over time addicts require more explicit and deviant material to meet their sexual “needs”
- Desensitization: What was first perceived as gross, shocking and disturbing, in time becomes common and acceptable
- Acting out sexually: There is an increasing tendency to act out behaviors viewed in pornography.
- Exposure to pornography can lead to an addiction that robs children of the opportunity to develop in a healthy manner psychologically, morally, and spiritually
- Apart from sexual addiction, children are also harmed when they receive a “sex mis-education” from viewing hardcore pornography, which depicts promiscuous, perverse, degrading, and violent sexual behaviors
- Many (most) men who are addicted to pornography were first exposed to pornography as children
- “Children” are also harmed when their addiction to pornography follows them into adulthood and prevents or ruins their marriages, costs them their jobs
